Charlie vs. Dylan
Despite her good grades Charlie was not a fan of school. Sadly she was well into a few weeks of her final high school year, one that had come to pass as they usually have for most of her life. Mostly ignored with little fan fare except for the girls from the Anime club that pass by her in the hallway, new students that haven?t learned how much of a social dead end is it to associate with her. Charlie was use to it by now though and this morning was no different, sitting in her jeans, worn out chuck taylors, a black t-shirt with a Tardis on it and her nose stuck between the pages of Ender?s Game. Sitting in the back of the room she was use to hearing the snickers of the jocks and punks who usually sat back there though she had no problems whenever a teacher decided to pick her to answer a question. In her mind she just wanted to blend in, go by and hopefully be ignored so she can get on with the day.
Charlie always felt being unremarkable would help her with this. When in grade school, in a bid to try and attain some popularity, she tried to come to school dressed up the same as a glamour shot her mother made her take at the department store photo studio. The ridiculous dress coupled with her failed attempt at recreating the make up from that day brought on a day?s worth of ridicule Charlie hasn?t forgotten. Since then she has never touched a smidgen of make-up. Her naturally olive skin was only blemished by a few large beauty marks on her cheek and chin as well as a fair bit of acne and scars from her trying to scratch them off. Her eyes were a sparkling green which Charlie quite loved, framed by thick black rimmed glasses. Her hair was straight and brown, coming down pass her shoulders as she didn?t much enjoy getting her haircut. She was about 5?6 and her body shape could be described as pear like. Her best asset that she often tried to hide with baggy jackets and hoodies was her pair of 38 DD breasts, suffering from a bit of sag from her refusal to wear a bra early on. She had a love hate relationship with her breasts, licking their large size even compared to the cheerleaders that poked fun of her in class but also hating how guys always seemed to draw their eyes towards them.
When she finally heard the bell ring Charlie raised her head as the kids settled into the class. Her home room teacher Ms. Winslow was standing there with her usual beaming smile with another girl standing beside her. Charlie put her book down fully as she saw the nervous looking girl sort of shuffle awkwardly in the front of the class. Charlie knew if she was in the same position she would be behaving similarly and figured the girl was suffering the same sort anxieties Charlie was thinking of if she was to be put on the spot up there. The new girl was dressed in jeans and a really thick white hoodie with a skull on the front. Underneath the hoodie was white t-shirt that was tight against the blonde?s busty chest. She looked about Charlie?s height. Her hair was blonde and was in wavy uneven curls that cascaded down her cheeks. Her eyes were a dull grey that were accented by her red horn rimmed glasses. Her skin was especially pale which showed off her freckles and acne problem. She had a pair of thick black army boots that would click when she walked.
?Well class I?d like everyone to give a warm welcome to Dylan Andrews. She was a little late with registration but we hope we can get her up to speed with the rest of us. I know space is a little tight here Dylan but there?s a seat in the back for you.?
Charlie looked over at the usual desk beside her that was always empty. It bothered her at first but now she was very much accustomed to it. She watched as Dylan slowly made her way to her seat, the blonde clumsily knocking off a front row student?s pencil eliciting an apology until she finally sat down. Once Dylan was settled Ms. Winslow started to write the day?s math lesson on the board.
After a few problems Charlie was already looking ahead in the text book. She was always a bit of a math whiz as she tried to concentrate on the problem when suddenly she heard someone talk to her in a whisper.
?Hey cool t-shirt!? Charlie looked over and saw Dylan leaning over trying to get her attention.
?Oh, well, thanks. I like your hoodie.? Charlie was a little surprised as no one usually talked to her especially during class. It was something the gossipy girls to the left or the other misfits in the back engaged in.
?I?m Dylan Andrews.?
?Yeah I heard up front there.?
Dylan blushed which was highlighted by her fair skin. ?Oh and your name if you don?t mind me asking??
Charlie shook her head as if she was shocked and said ?oh sorry Charlotte Benjamin but everyone calls me Charlie.?
?Nice name? Dylan said with a smile.
?You can have it if you want? retorted Charlie with a bit of dryness in her tone.
?Excuse me Charlie and Dylan but if you have something to say would you care to share it with the whole class??
Charlie was mortified. She had never been called out in class because of something like that. Everyone was doing what hadn?t been done to her since that fateful glamour shot day in grade school, they were looking and paying attention to her. Charlie just kept staring out dumbfounded before one kid yelled out.
?Don?t worry miss, Charlie just finally found someone that speaks her language.?
A few kids laughed as Charlie immediately buried her face in her notebook as Ms. Winslow continued ?I?m happy you two are socializing but please save it for after the lesson. Now??
Charlie couldn?t believe what just happened. Years of trying to not bring attention to her were ruined in a few moment of polite conversation. She didn?t dare lift her head up from her note book as she frantically completed what she thought would be the homework assignment for that evening would be. Without hearing the sweet salvation of the period bell she kept writing, more and more, the next chapter of questions, random doodles, fan fiction ideas she had in her head. She kept scribbling her pencil over the paper in an effort to try and drown out the world around her until she finally felt a hand on her shoulder.
?Hey um class is done Charlie.?
It was Dylan, the last girl left in the room besides her as Charlie finally pulled her head up fully and started to make her way out of the classroom without saying anything to Dylan at all.
The day seemed to grind to a slow halt as her earlier call out in Math class seemed to floating around her. Every moment Charlie looked up and around all she could see were people whispering, laughing and pointing at her. What made it worse was it seemed Dylan had the exact same schedule with her, the usual empty seat at her side now occupied by the new girl whose very sight just made Charlie blush more and more. When lunch finally came it was a welcome relief for Charlie as she ran out of the school and to the bleachers where she usually spent her lunch period.
Charlie was happy to finally be alone when quickly opened her bag, pulling out her sandwich, a bag of carrots, some chips and two juice boxes when she suddenly heard a voice from behind you.
?Hey mind if I join you??
Charlie looked back and saw Dylan making her way across the field as Charlie simply stated ?yeah I don?t mind.?
For a moment the girls ate together but in silence, the only sounds that could be heard were their soft munching and slurps from their drinks. Charlie wasn?t sure what to do, she certainly didn?t want to be rude and Dylan was more than free to sit at the bleachers but Charlie had enjoyed her solitude and was slowly getting annoyed at Dylan.
?Hey Charlie I?m sorry I got you in trouble in Math, it won?t happen again.?
Charlie was taken off guard from the apology as she swallowed a handful of carrots quickly to prevent speaking with her mouth full. ?No worries, I mean, I guess I shouldn?t have cold shouldered you after that.?
Dylan smiled as she said ?it seems we have the same schedule. Are you in art class??
?Yeah, next period, I guess you do too.?
Dylan blushed again as she said ?yeah, I figured you were. I?ve seen you doodle in class. You have a really good style.?
Charlie laughed as she said ?it?s more just ripping off better anime artist.?
?No it?s really good. Want to see some of my stuff??
Charlie nodded as Dylan reached into her bag and pulled out a massive binder filled
with line paper covered in numerous sketches. Pictures of popular super heroes, space alien girls in bikinis, alien monsters with tentacles, the subject material was varied but
Charlie liked what she saw.
?Hey maybe we can work on an art project this year??
Dylan smiled as she said ?yeah that sounds like a good idea.?

Charlie was slowly getting use to having someone to talk to as the weeks passed by. The two girls were by no means inseparable and while Charlie would often spend time in her usually quiet spots like the bleachers or the copy room to work on the school?s magazine Dylan would find solace in the library where she usually read or studied. Still between classes the two girls could often be seen chatting with one another and they usually worked together on group projects. Slowly Charlie was looking forward to being in school more and more especially Math class where Charlie and Dylan had a chance to chat some when they were given time to work on problems.
After the lesson Charlie tried to initiate a conversation with Dylan but she said it?d have to wait as she was working on some difficult algebra problems. Charlie had already completed the night before so she spent the time to get back to her novel. A few moments passed when a shadow appeared over her book. Charlie looked up, originally perturbed but then smiled when she saw Ox standing beside her.
Oxnard Williams was a line backer for the school?s football team that everyone simply called Ox. While he mostly hung out with the jocks Charlie often caught up with him at the local comic book store as the two enjoyed super hero comics since they were kids. Ox often asked Charlie for help with homework due to concentration issues he had during lectures and lessons. Charlie prided herself on being able to guide Ox through difficult problems as she adjusted her glasses she looked at the algebra problem that Ox had pointed out.
?Well I?m doing this in my head and the answer is right but this isn?t the answer I got when I did it.? Charlie kept scribbling and erasing notes on a piece of paper as Ox looked on.
?Geez I thought I had a handle on this stuff but I guess I just don?t.?
?Now Ox don?t worry we?ll figure this out.?
As Charlie bit on her pencil Dylan walked over popping her head between the two of them.
?I can see the problem!? Dylan proclaimed.
?And what would that be?? asked Charlie with a snide tone in her voice.
?Ox you just copied the question wrong. See, misplaced bracket.?
Ox slapped his face as he said ?oh my god you?re right. I?m such an idiot.?
Dylan smiled as she said ?geez Ox don?t be so hard on yourself. I?m not doing so hot
on these questions. Let?s work together on them, I think Charlie has already finished them.?
Ox nodded as he said ?ye? yeah, you want to get back to your reading right Charlie.
?Oh? yeah I guess, that?s cool.? Charlie returned to her book, the corner of her eye peaking out her peripheral as she watched Ox and Dylan work on math problems.
Lunch quickly came as Charlie and Dylan met up at the bleachers as they had been doing. As they ate there was less chatter than usual. It wasn?t until Charlie finished up most of her lunch when she started to talk to Dylan.
?So what are you doing this weekend?? asked Charlie.
?Oh well, I?m kind of busy.?
?Oh, that sucks. I was going to ask if you wanted to hang at the mall or something.?
?Well Ox wanted to see that new horror movie. I said I?d be game.?
Charlie took a long slurp of her drink as she said ?well he asked me but I?m not really into horror movies.?
?Yeah he mentioned that. Maybe you should still come??
?No thanks, I just may stay home this weekend.?

Charlie had a hard time sleeping that weekend. Whenever she closed her eyes the same dream kept reoccurring. She watched in horror from the back of the theater as Dylan and Ox got closer and closer while watching the horror movie. Before long they would start making out in front of her. At the moment she would storm out of the theater and wake up, quickly sitting up every time forcing her to go to the bathroom for a glass of water as she tried to forget about what Dylan had told her on Friday.
No matter how hard she tried she kept dreaming the same dream, by Sunday she was exhausted, having a hard time even studying of playing video games. By ten o?clock that evening she was already heading to bed, a move that concerned her parents as she usually spent her time in front of the computer till at least one in the morning.
Charlie crashed onto her bed, clutching her pillow hard as her eyes closed again.
Soon she felt the sticky floor beneath her feet. The snippets of the horror movie she saw in the trailer and on TV flashed in front of her as Ox and Dylan were busy kissing each other in front of her. This time Charlie didn?t wake up though. She stormed over to their row looking down at the two of them. Wordless she slapped Dylan on the cheek grabbing the attention of the blonde. All of the sudden Charlie grabbed two handfuls of curly blonde hair and started to drag Dylan out of the theater. It wasn?t until Dylan?s scream pierced through her ears that Charlie woke up. Her alarm clock indicated that she had slept in by accident.
